Trama
Chakuro è l'archivista quattordicenne della Mud Whale, un'isola utopica che solca la superficie di un'interminabile mare di sabbia. Nove su dieci abitanti della Mud Whale sono stati beneficiati e al tempo stesso maledetti dall'abilità di usare il saimia, dei poteri speciali che li condannano a una fine prematura. Chakuro e i suoi amici sono stati su altre isole, ma non hanno mai incontrato un altro essere umano. Un giorno Chakuro visita un'isola grande tanto quanto Mud Whale e incotra una donna che cambierà il suo destino.
